The Watches go up...

The Hurricane Watches just went up from Longboat Key and south. We live on Siesta Key -- the key directly south of Longboat -- so here we go.....

After a couple days of preparations, we're prepared. House secure - check. Yard secure - check. Personal documents in waterproof container - check. Dog food, toilet paper, medications, etc - check.

Facts:

Wilma's looking like a Cat 2 storm, with projected landfall in the Marco Island - north to Fort Myers area (about 60-90mi south of us). The south wall will be the worst part - hurricane winds and a storm surge in the Cat 3 range (cuz of storm speed). We'll be on the north wall (hopefully) - which would mean lower winds (by 25-30mph), but greater rain and tornado threat, and a 2-6ft storm surge.

Our house is a 2 story on concrete pillars, and we're 1.5 blocks from the water, so I don't think the flooding will be bad that way. The worry will be if windows go, and rain comes in - but we'll see.

Heading inland 8-10 miles, outside of the low lying flood areas, to kim's grandma's house -- complete with nice hurricane shutters, etc. We're not all that worried about personal safety, so much as the inability to have a livable place to come back to.

Worst case: we don't.
Best case: we're back home (with power, etc) by Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

No way to know at this point....prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.

I'm expecting to be pretty unreachable through AT LEAST tuesday - fyi.
